Verse for the loss of a female relative or friend

Her Journey

Don’t think of her as gone away,

Her journey has just begun.

Life holds so many facets,

This earth is only one.

Just think of her as resting

From the sorrow and the tears

In a place of warmth and comfort

Where there are no days or years.

Think how she must be wishing

That we could know today

How nothing but our sadness

Can really pass away.

And think of her as living

In the hearts of those she touched,

For nothing loved is ever lost

And she was loved so much.

Author unknown

She Is Just Away

You cannot say, you must not say

That she is dead, she is just away!

With a cheery smile

And a wave of the hand

She has wandered into an unknown land

And left us dreaming how very fair

It needs must be

Since she lingers there;

So think of her as faring on, as dear

In the love of There as the love of Here,

Think of her still as the same, and say

She is not dead, she is just away.

Adapted from the writings of

James Whitcomb Riley

As We Look Back

Mother, as we look back over time

We find ourselves wondering…

Did we remember to thank you enough

For all you have done for us?

For all the times you were by our sides

To help and support us…

To celebrate our successes…

To understand our problems…

And accept our defeats?

Or for teaching us by your example,

The value of hard work, good judgment,

Courage and integrity?

We wonder if we ever thanked you

For the sacrifices you made.

To let us have the very best?

And for the simple things

Like laughter, smiles and times we shared?

If we have forgotten to show our

Gratitude enough for all the things you did,

Mum, we’re thanking you now.

And we are hoping you knew all along,

How very much you meant to us.

What Makes a Beautiful Person

A laugh that’s there, for all to share,

A heart, compassionate and kind,

A soul that makes friends everywhere,

And to prejudice, is blind

Eyes that see only a person’s best,

A mouth that tells no lies,

But smiles, with the warmth of a helping hand,

These are qualities we prize.

And all these things, we found in you,

No need was there to pretend,

And the thing we liked, most of all,

Was the fact, that you were our friend.

How Did She Live

Not, how did she die, but how did she live?

Not what did she gain, but what did she give?

These are the units to measure the worth

Of a woman as a woman, regardless of birth.

Not what was her church, nor what was her creed?

But had she befriended those really in need?

Was she ever ready, with words of good cheer?

To bring back a smile, to banish a tear

Not what did the notice’s in the paper say

But how many were sorry when she passed away

Sometimes

Sometimes on our

Journey through life

We meet people who leave

Footprints on our mind

They challenge us to see things differently

And to question our personal reality.

Sometimes on our

Journey through life

We meet people who leave

Footprints on our heart

They create a safe place for us

To open our hearts to feel loved and special

Then sometimes on our

Journey through life

We meet people who leave

Footprints on our souls

They share themselves with us so profoundly

That they touch the very essence

Of who we are in that secret quiet place.

 (Name) has left gentle footprints

On the minds, hearts and souls

Of many here today

May we always remember

The beauty of her love,

Her kindness and the

Special way she touched our lives.

I Miss You Sister

I miss you sister

With all my heart

Your life was too short

The good times about to start.

The seasons will pass

So quick, as they do

And your presence will be missed

While I struggle on through

We had lots of good times

And plenty of fun

Now I am lonely for you

The clouds have covered my sun

The years seem to yawn

Without you here with me

I hope you are at peace now

I hope you are free

Today is the Bridge

If yesterday is for cherished memories

And tomorrow presents a range of possibilities

Then today is the bridge that links the two

If yesterday fills us with warmth and joy

And tomorrow presents as hard and cold

Then today seems a distance too great to travel alone

If yesterday holds our hopes and dreams

And tomorrow presents as so far away

Then today seems like an impassable void

If yesterday is forever locked in our hearts

And tomorrow will come as it always does

Then today we will do what we must do

Today we must say goodbye to this special lady

A wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend

Who yesterday gave us so many wonderful memories

And tomorrow will forever remain in our hearts

We Will Miss So Much a Lady

We will miss so much a lady,

Our wife - our Mum and grandmother

Her unselfish ways, behind the scenes care,

And for us - there can never be another.

A lady who reached out to so many

A lady of never-ending laughter and joy

She was there for any who needed her

A ‘stand in, mother’ for many a girl or boy

One who shared many cups of coffee

And shared many tears as well,

One who nursed and nurtured many of you here

And made her children - her friends as well.

She selflessly opened her home,

Her heart, her time, her life

And swept you all in to an embrace

All – encompassing - a friend, a mother, a wife.

Her style was one of tolerance

Full of love and grace

And we know in our hearts

We never will forget her beloved face.

Our Mother Kept a Garden

Our Mother kept a garden

A garden of the heart

She planted all the good things

That gave our lives their start

She turned us to the sunshine

And encouraged us to dream

Fostering and nurturing

The seeds of self-esteem

And when the winds and rain came

She protected us enough -

But not too much because she knew

We’d need to stand up strong and tough

Her constant good example

Always taught us right from wrong -

Markers for our pathway

That will last a lifetime long.

We are our Mother’s garden.

We are her legacy -

And we hope today she feels the love

Reflected back unconditionally.

Our Mother’s Hands

Hands that rocked the cradle

From the moment of our birth

Their tender touch remembered

By those still on this earth.

Soft as silk those hands

That taught us how to play

Banishing childhood fears

They soothed each one away.

When we grew much older

And troubles came our way

Those hands caressing ours

Did more - than words could say.

Mother’s hands were gentle

They’re missed so very much

We’d give the world to feel once more

Their warm and tender touch

Those hands were full of comfort

Now they lie at rest

But memory holds them close

To the ones they served the best.

For The Love of Roses

We held so close our mother’s heart

So carefully, and soft as in a rose’s bloom,

She spoke to us of life and love

And of hope like a sweet perfume.

The rose ‘tis such a pretty flower

Many colours, shapes and hues

And mum did try to show us all

Fear not my loves, see through.

Her garden was her pride and joy

To feed, to nurture, not a chore

Her beautiful roses reflected her life

So enduring, prickly, but give me more.

And like an overgrown rose

When life, her soul did prune

Shook off her sorrows, shook off her woes

And grew again, so strong, so soon.

And softly she did leave us

Like the petals from the rose that fall

As she bid us goodbye,

And goodbye to us all.

We never will forget her smile

Her beloved face her words of care

Live full, your lives, my children

Live on and your love, do share.

Legacy of Love

A wife, a mother, a grandmother too,

This is the legacy we have from you.

You taught us love and how to fight,

You gave us strength, you gave us might.

A stronger person would be hard to find,

You could be stubborn in body, stubborn in mind.

Yet, your grace and your elegance, so refined,

And in your heart, you were always kind.

You fought for us all, in one way or another,

Not just as a wife, not just as a mother.

For all of us you gave your best,

Now the time has come for you to rest.

So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep,

Your love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep.

What ‘Mother’ Means

M - Is for the million things she gave me,

O - Means only that she’s growing old,

T - Is for the tears she shed to save me,

H - is for her heart of purest gold.

E - Is for her eyes, with love-light shining

R - Means right, and right she’ll always be

Put them all together, they spell ‘MOTHER’

A word, that means the world to me.

Smile and Go On

You can shed tears that she has gone

Or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back

Or you can open your eyes and see all that she’s left

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her

Or you can be full of the love you shared

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday

Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday

You can remember her and only that she’s gone

Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back

Or you can do what she’d want:

Smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Mother

We will miss so much a lady,

Who lies so peaceful now and still,

She showed us how to fight in life,

She showed she had a will.

She showed us courage and compassion

We won’t forget her lovely face,

She did so much for all of us

She is impossible to replace

She truly was the family key

It’s hard to see another

She was the force behind us all

Above all, she was our MOTHER

The Cord

We are connected, my mum and I

By an invisible cord not seen by the eye

It’s not like the cord that connects us ‘til birth

This cord can’t be seen by any on Earth

This cord does its work right from the start

It binds us together, attached to my heart

I know that its there though no-one can see

The invisible cord - from my mum to me.

The strength of this cord is hard to describe

It can’t be destroyed, it can’t be denied

It’s stronger than any cord man could create.

It withstands the test, can hold any weight

And though you are gone and not here with me

The cord is still there, that no-one can see

It pulls at my heart, I am bruised. I am sore

But this cord is my lifeline as never before

I am thankful that we are connected this way.

A mother and child – death can’t take it away.

“You Were the Greatest Gift of Our Life”

We don’t recall the first time you held us

Or when we first heard your voice

But from the first moment you held us in your arms

You made the most selfless choice…

You chose to change your busy life

So that our lives could begin

You were our shelter from the rain

On you – we could depend.

You held our hands when we were afraid

And helped us to mend our first broken heart

You bandaged our wounds

Wiped our tears

And kept us - from falling apart.

You loved us without question

No matter what we did

You shaped us into confident adults

From such awkward kids.

Even though you’re no longer beside us

Your love is matched by no other.

And we are thankful each and every day

For you were our greatest gift

For us you were our mother.

Grandma

Grandma

Everyone’s sad and I understand why

But I don’t feel I want to cry

Because I know the secret of where you are

And know I don’t have to look very far

Given wings so you could fly

I’ll miss you Grandma but I won’t cry

I know you watch me as I sleep

I know you hear me when I speak

Finally you’ve been set free

To be all you were meant to be

A rainbow, a storm, a sunlit sky

I’ll miss you Grandma but I won’t cry

Because now you’re with me everyday

I feel you watching me as I play

In all the beauty surrounding me

I see my Grandma looking back at me

I’ll miss your kiss, your hand to hold

I’ll miss watching you grow old

I’ll miss you Grandma but I won’t cry

Because your spirit, your love will never die.

 Nanna You Have Left Us

Nanna you have left us and now you feel no more pain

In the place where you wait till you see us all again

We will miss your laughter, fun, and gentleness.

We will miss the times to come, now filled with emptiness,

We will miss the things we used to do with you.

We will miss your wisdom that carried us all through.

We need to say goodbye now that you’re gone

And honour your memory now that you have moved on.

We’ll miss you terribly and hold your love in our hearts

And when we need to turn to you, we won’t be so far apart.

We’ll know each day that you’re still with us,

And, as always, our guide and our trust.

And so goodbye for now our dear nanna

So long as we still love you, you’ll never be too far away.

Nana

We had a wonderful nana,

One who never really grew old;

Her smile was made of sunshine,

And her heart was solid gold;

Her eyes were as bright as shining stars,

And in her cheeks fair roses you’d see.

We had a wonderful nana

And that’s the way it will always be.

But take heed, because

She’s still keeping an eye on all of us,

So let’s make sure

She will like what she sees.

Great Grandma You Meant the World to Me

Of all life’s gifts, great or small,

The blessing of a Great Grandma is the best of all.

My great Grandma’s love was like a rose,

With each day it did thrive and grows.

Great Grandma is a blessing: someone to hold dear,

The world was a better place when she was here.

Great Grandma was so special and kind as can be

Who else could love me so perfectly

Time with my Great Grandma was time well spent

It was a happy occasion and a joyous event.

My dearest Great Grandma you have given me memories to treasure

You are one of the greatest gifts and always to be with you was a true pleasure

I will always remember that my Great Grandma loved me

Nothing can come between my Great Grandma and me,

No amount of time and space

I shall always recall the touch of her hand

And the radiant smile on her face.

Great Grandma, thank you for all the memories

And all of the great times we have had together

I will never forget you.

The Best Nanna

What fun I had every school holiday

At Nanna’s small house where I lazed them away

I would watch her knitting a jumper for me

Or I’d swing on the hills hoist, fast and free

Watch TV shows that were normally too late

Coz Nanna was a night-owl, as a kid that was great

Played cards all day with Nanna the teacher

But despite your best efforts, you just couldn’t beat her!

The hugs I will miss, and the music and cards

To lose someone great - it’s always so hard

But she always was happy, and I will be too

The pleasure, of my memories; that will just have to do.

Having a Nanna Like You

We just wanted to let you know

You meant the world to us

Only a heart as dear as yours

Would give – so unselfishly

And without any fuss.

The many things that you’ve done

All the times that you were there

Helped us know deep down inside

How much you really cared.

Even though we might not have said

We appreciated all you did

Richly blessed by one so true

Was having a nanna like you.

A mum is a special gift

And one you think will stay

I Held Your Hands

I held your hands as we lived and loved

For over ninety years those old gnarled hands

That once - were young and smooth

Created beautiful school work

Chopped wood and stoked the Metters stove

Baked truckloads of scones

Smacked naughty children’s bottoms

Cuddled three generations of babies

And wrote many newsy letters to friends.

Those hands wrote decades of diaries

Faithfully recording the mundane

And the interesting times.

Your hands would fold as you listened avidly to

The latest news about your grandchildren

And great grandchildren

Their careers, their academic achievements

Or-their latest antics.

I can visualise your hands then

All a-flutter with delight

We will all miss you

And those hands that held and helped

Us all - whenever we needed you.

I held your hands as you lay dying.

I held your hands.

Sue Henthorn©

Hands of Love

Hands that held us close

From the moment of our birth

Their tender touch remembered

By us here on this earth.

Soft and gentle those hands

That taught us how to play

Banishing childhood fears

They soothed them all away.

When we grew much older

And troubles came our way

Those hands caressing ours

Did more than words could say.

Mother’s hands were gentle

They’re missed so very much

We’d give the world to feel once more

Their warm and tender touch

And softly she did leave us

Like the petals from the rose that fall

Holding on to her son’s hands

As she bid us goodbye - and goodbye to us all.

When You Thought That We Weren’t Looking

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We saw you hang our first painting on the refrigerator,

And we immediately wanted to paint another one.

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We saw you feed a stray cat,

And we learned that it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We saw you make our favourite cake for us and

We learned that little things can be special things in life.

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick and

We learned that we all have to help take care of each other.

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We saw you give your time and money to help people who had nothing and

We learned that those who have something should give to those who don’t.

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We felt you kiss us good night and felt loved and safe.

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We saw you take care of our house and every one in it and

We learned we have to take care of what we are given.

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We saw how you handled your responsibilities,

Even when you didn’t feel good:

And we learned that we would have to be responsible when we grew up.

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We saw tears come from your eyes and

We learned that sometimes things hurt, but it’s all right to cry.

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We learned most of life’s lessons that we needed to know

To be good and productive people when we grew up.

When you thought that we weren’t looking,

We looked at you and wanted to say,

“Thanks for all the things we saw when you thought that we weren’t looking.”

A Friend So Dear

I’ve written this for you my dear, to tell of a friend so dear

I’ll remember all the good times, as I wipe away a tear.

We shared so much together, you were always there for me

With support, joy and laughter, as we raised our family.

Through births and deaths and weddings, through sickness and through health

This bond we had through friendship cannot be bought with wealth.

Your gift of special friendship, as we travelled on life’s way

Was a wondrous thing to treasure, and will stay with me day by day.

How fortunate we all are, here, to have a friend so true

For such loyalty and friendship, comes only to a few.

Your electric personality, drew people in your wake

And you always had a welcome, when a visit we would make.

To your home and lovely garden, full of love and hope and fun

Amid the many trees and flowers, we always loved to come.

Oh, my friend, how we’ll miss you, your zest and love of life

A good friend and mother, and an ever-loving wife.

Your grandchildren brought you pleasure, deeply loved within your heart

And you’ll live on within them, for of you, they are a part.

When sickness overtook you, you met each challenge with a fight

You never said “Why me?” or bemoaned your awful plight.

Your courage and your attitude, was an inspiration to us all

You never quit, or yet complained, even at the final call.

Thank you

MUM

For being someone

We’ve always been able

To turn to

For acceptance, reassurance

And LOVE

Someone who taught

Us values

That will last a lifetime

Someone who keeps

Growing dearer to us

All the time…

Thank you

MUM

For filling our life

With so much LOVE

No matter

Where we are

You will always be

A part of us

In THOUGHT, in HEART, in LOVE.

Dear Nanna

To explain in words what you mean to us

Is something hard to do.

So many memories throughout our lives

Are ones filled with you.

Every Birthday, Christmas or main event

From childhood through to now,

Engagements, Weddings our children's births

You were there to celebrate and love us all.

These days and other days you were there

To share our lives – always happy,

Laughing and smiling with us –

You never missed a thing.

You had so much love to give us –

Each and every Grandchild –

It is hard to imagine another day

Without seeing your smile.

Your smile and laugh that could light up our day –

Does not end as this day fades.

For all of us can look up into the sky tonight and see

The brightest twinkling star.

That star will be there every night

For all of us to see,

Just like the memories and love

We will carry in our hearts

Each and every day.

Nanna we will love you now and always.

Natasha Fisher

Dear Mum

We know in our heart

You are now without pain

But we can’t believe

We won’t see you again

Your courage and strength

In all you endured

Gave us hope and the wish

That one day you’d be cured

We miss you and love you

May your spirit be free

When we look to the stars

Your smile we shall see.

For Nanna

I just wanted to let you know

That you will always be,

A very special person,

Who meant the world to me.

From the time I could remember,

Until this very sad day,

You only grew more beautiful

With your tender touch of grey.

You took the time to listen

To what I had to say,

Which meant so very much

In this world of dismay.

And even though some lines

Had come across your face,

To me they added character

In their proper place.

And I saw you were unchanging

In a world that changes fast;

To me you were the link

Between my future and my past.

The years will come and go

And I know that things will change,

But the memories I hold of you,

In my heart will always remain.

Mother Is Gone

It is a deep mystery

This matter of life and death…

That the same person

Who brought you a thousand joys,

Can one day leaving us,

Shedding a thousand tears…

So suddenly sometimes

That we grope blindly

For words unspoken,

And for the hug we needed to give

To say goodbye

And we wonder

How this thread that holds us

All to life

Can be so thin and fragile…

Until one day we find the courage

To accept that the living aren’t meant

To understand death,

Only to celebrate life,

And to remember that the only

Real death is forgetting.
